Carp fishing – where to look and what to fish for

Crucian carp is one of the most common and unpretentious fish in our reservoirs. This hardy fish is found everywhere. Another feature of the crucian carp is that it is very tenacious and can withstand rather dirty and oxygen-poor water.

It would seem that crucian carp is one of the most typical and ordinary objects for fishing, and in every market for this fish in bulk.

However, fishing for crucian carp can be excellent pleasure, properly cooked fresh, non-market crucian carp is very tasty, and the widespread prevalence of this species makes it possible to catch it in many reservoirs, even in urban areas. Often, you don’t need to spend a lot of money on gas or tickets to catch a crucian carp – it can live half an hour from your home. On the other hand, crucian carp is sometimes very picky, and catching it is no easier than bream or other cautious fish. Then fishing turns into a test of fishing skill and becomes an interesting adventure.

Where to catch crucian carp?

Crucian carp is very common. Its range is a significant part of Eurasia – from the Iberian Peninsula to the Urals. If we take it for specific reservoirs, then specimens of decent weight are found in large rivers.

Float in the reedsLarge crucian carp lives in sufficient quantities in lakes, in coastal estuaries, sometimes entering brackish water and in reservoirs. The leaders in size – crucian carp, caught in the east of their range – in the lakes of the Urals, reached 4-5 kg in weight. If we take specific conditions, then crucian carp is very unpretentious to the quality of water – it is not a pike perch or burbot. It lives in rivers, lakes, reservoirs, rates and ponds, in canals, in deep swamps and mined out pits.

He is one of the few fish that lives in completely stagnant, stagnant or freezing water bodies. In the latter, the crucian carp buries deep in the silt in winter and so survives. Fish also live within the city – in ponds, rivers and cooling ponds of power plants.

Crucian carp does not like strong currents, preferring weak or no water flow at all.

Consequently, in lakes, stakes and ponds, it is found everywhere (unless it has “favorite” places), and on rivers and reservoirs it prefers areas where the current slows down – backwaters, bays.

There he has “feeding routes” – if you find them, then the catch is guaranteed. Crucian carp loves aquatic vegetation – many fishermen have noticed how the reeds move from the movement of the fish below – this crucian is looking for food at the roots.

Fishing rods in the reedsSo fishing for crucian carp with a float rod in reeds, cattails and other plants is much higher than on an empty shore. Of course, crucians also love deep places in the center of the reservoir, but near the wall of the reeds you can always stumble upon a representative of their tribe.

Despite the low oxygen consumption, the crucian does not like too shallow places – it usually bites from the bottom if the depth exceeds 50 cm, and even more often – at least 70-100 cm. Again, the presence of thickets of aquatic vegetation contributes to the approach of the crucian carp closer to the shore – you can find a lot of tasty things there.

As already mentioned, a large crucian carp lives in large bodies of water, where there is a predator eating part of the small change, and the surviving fish grow to a decent size. And in isolated reservoirs, where there are no predatory fish, there are a lot of crucian carp, but it is small – 50-100 gr. weight.

Interesting fact! The rotan firebrand, which is considered harmful (it eats the eggs of other fish), caught in such rates, has a beneficial effect on the size of the crucian – it eats juveniles, enables the rest of the fish to eat better and grow larger. And the rotan itself is larger there – due to the fish diet.

Carp baits

On the one hand, crucian carp is quite omnivorous, on the other hand, it can be picky, especially in summer when there is a lot of food. A characteristic feature is that in spring and autumn, when underwater vegetation is scarce, crucian carp more readily bite on animal baits, and in summer – on vegetable ones. But this does not mean that the crucian carp will not take on worms in the summer. The main rule is to have several different attachments on hand, which will contribute to success.

MuckwormAnimal nozzles:

  • Worms. The most classic ones, indicated by Sabaneev in the 19th century. Especially dung – tenacious, active on the hook, with an attractive smell. You can put the worms in a container with aromatic substances (oils, herbs) overnight – there they will acquire a special aroma.
  • Maggot. Placed on a hook, several pieces. Sometimes more catchy than a worm.
  • Caddis flies. You can also use it for the sake of experience.
  • Bloodworm. Suitable for catching crucian carp in winter.

Vegetable nozzles:

  • Bread. Gray and black, less often white. It is not bad in many cases, the most affordable attachment.
  • Dough. Plain or flavored with various oils and attractants. Shows itself well, but weakly holds on to the hook.
  • Manka. Knead in water, like dough, to a viscous consistency to roll balls.
  • Mastyrka. A mixture of peas and semolina, cooked and kneaded.
  • Pearl barley. Steamed in a thermos ahead of time, you can add flavors.

Bite activatorBy the way, about aromas – crucian carp loves mouth-watering smells, use this. Flavors for catching crucian carp can be both natural and artificial.

You can add droplets of unrefined sunflower oil, anise, garlic, caramel, honey flavors.

Plain sugar or vanilla will work as well. Remember – do not overdo it with smells, otherwise you will scare off the fish, especially if you go fishing to catch not only crucian carp, but also carp.

Important! Mix the vegetable baits on the water from the reservoir where you will fish.

The bait can be used during fishing, as well as as a bait, beforehand, in a day or two, feed the intended area for successful fishing.

Groundbait ballsPrivada. This is food that is poured into the water in advance in order to attract fish to a specific place. Usually it is left for several weeks so that the fish will remember the feeding place. If you go to a permanent place of fishing – to the dacha, to the village, etc. – weld the fish every week – this will give a good result. For bait, a simple bait will go – sunflower cake (cake), crackers, etc. Do not overfeed the fish!

Lure. The bait is thrown immediately before and during fishing so that the fish will pay attention to the right place. Use regular dumplings or specialty baits from the store (consult with the seller). You can make the mixture yourself – by combining oil cakes, cereals, crackers, oils for smell.

The main condition is that the bait for catching crucian carp should attract the fish with a smell, and not saturate it – it easily disintegrates, does not form large lumps. The bait on the hook should be more nutritious than the bait. It is better to use Makukha “fried”, extremely fresh, with a pleasant, not rancid smell.

Crucian carp goes both to the float tackle and to the bottom. In this regard, fishing for crucian carp is diverse – you can put a donk and a float rod next to it – and remove carp from both.

Fishing rods on the lakeTackle for catching crucian carp with a float rod assumes a rod 4-5 m long, lightweight, durable. It can be with a blind rig, and with a reel. The hook for catching crucian carp is of medium size, with a short forend – crucian carp is not a perch, it does not swallow hooks. It is convenient to put a ball of semolina or a small worm on a short hook so as to completely close it.

What is the best float for catching crucian carp? The float is a feather or an artificial one similar in shape. You can use a float for long casting – a float of the “wagler” type with a sliding rig. Basically, crucian carp is caught from the bottom – so that the float lies at an angle to the water. Or near the bottom – crucian carp mainly feeds in the bottom layers of water, although it can eat duckweed on the surface (but then it is difficult to catch it). It is advisable to use a leash made of thinner fishing line to match the color of the water, so as not to scare off a more cautious large crucian carp (diameter 0.15-0.18 mm, if large fish such as carp or bream are not expected).

The bite of a crucian carp looks like this – usually the float lies on the water and trembles. You need to hook up at the time of lowering or immediately after he lay down. If later, the crucian will spit out or knock the bait. Sometimes the float bounces, floats to the side. Less often, crucian carp drowns it like a perch.

On bottom gear – feeder, picker, donk-rubber – crucian carp also goes willingly. The difference is that you will not be able to use dough, semolina and bread – when casting or releasing the gum, they will simply be washed off with water. The main nozzles are worm, maggot, pearl barley. Use a feeder with slowly eroding groundbait – factory or homemade. Also crucian carp can bite on technoplankton – Hungarian tackle for catching silver carp and grass carp. Moreover, it falls on rather large hooks, designed for large fish, or clings to the belly, trying to try the pill.

Some secrets of catching crucian carp:

  • bites best at dawn, a little worse in the evening (after 4 pm), bite in the afternoon mainly in spring or autumn, when fat is fed. In summer, it bites mainly at 5-10 am, crucian carp loves vegetation – reeds, etc. Try to look for it there;
  • Fisherman on the pondcontrary to popular belief – it bites in winter, but sluggishly. In winter, crucian carp should be looked for in pits or near warm places – spillways, etc. It is not completely caught only where water freezes – there it buries itself in silt;
  • you can also fish from a boat – for example, find a feeding route for crucian carp in a reservoir. It also shows good fishing for crucian carp along the line of reeds or islands of vegetation;
  • if there is an opportunity to make a permanent place – a bridge, a masonry, cut a window in the reeds from the shore to open water – great, a well-boiled crucian carp will bite perfectly there. The main thing is to weld on regularly and not to litter these places;
  • large crucian carp is very careful – although this is not bream with its famous suspicion, but if you are catching with a float, you should not make noise, move abruptly, etc. Also – a large crucian carp that has fallen off worsens the bite of all fish for a long time;
  • do not hesitate to use flavors – both natural and purchased, but do not get carried away, because activators such as Dry Blooder mow down the carp on the spot, where will you put it later?

These are the main points for the successful catch of large crucians, the rest depends only on the desire of the angler himself.
