Fishing for carp in autumn – tackle and bait
Autumn is a special time for any carp angler. A little more, and the reservoirs will be covered with ice, so you need to have time to enjoy fishing, get the most out of it. Unlike summer fishing, fishing for carp in the fall brings trophies more often, but some factors complicate it. The fact is that with a cold snap, carp becomes unpredictable. If you just come to the first pond you come across and throw your fishing rods, the success of fishing will be a big question. At this time of the year, it is necessary to carefully prepare the tackle, to know exactly where to look for fish and what bait to offer it.
Features of fishing for carp in the fall
Sensing the approach of winter, the object of the catch begins to actively feed from the first days of autumn. In the midst of September, he gets a real hunger. The peak biting falls on the time interval from 9.00 to 12.00. While the weather is warm, he can be effectively caught with vegetable baits, but as the water temperature decreases, he pays more and more attention to animal food, which contains a lot of protein. High activity of carp is observed on sunny warm days, and in cloudy, rainy or windy weather, it shifts to a depth and feeds little.
When the water temperature drops to 12 degrees, this heat-loving fish is already looking for a suitable pit for wintering. At the same time, her appetite decreases markedly. When the temperature drops to 6-7 degrees, the carp stops leaving deep, calm areas with a good oxygen balance, moves little, feeds rarely and in small portions. It is very difficult to catch him at this time.
In the second half of autumn, abnormal warming occurs when the sun’s rays warm up the average depths. On such days, carps can go out to feed at lunchtime. During the night, the water cools down again, so in the morning the carp angler has nothing to do on the pond.
The behavior of carp in the autumn months is influenced not only by the weather and water temperature. With the arrival of autumn, living conditions change. Aquatic vegetation in the coastal zone is gradually dying off, forcing him to look for safe anchorage at depth. In addition, plants begin to rot, which negatively affects the oxygen balance. Another reason for carp leaving shallow water is the deterioration of the food supply. With the first night frosts, some microorganisms that feed on it die, others move to a depth where, as you know, it is several degrees warmer. Trying to get enough before the onset of the first severe cold weather, the fish goes after the “food”.
Search for promising places
Choosing the right place to fish is the most important aspect of carp fishing in the fall. If the weather is right for the season, the carp is most often found at depths of 2 to 4 meters until mid-October. During prolonged warming, it goes out to feed in shallow coastal waters, where it can be successfully caught by casting the bait under thickets of reeds.
In mature autumn, the object of the catch prefers to stand in the pits, but it feeds outside its camp, although it does not move far from it. Moreover, in such places usually not two or three individuals gather, but a large flock. That is why you should first try to fish at the exits from the pits. Especially those on which there are various shelters: stones, driftwood, flooded trees.
A good bite of carp can be counted on where the muddy bottom borders on a hard surface – sandy or covered with shellfish. In this case, the bait must be applied to solid ground, but as close to the silt as possible. The fish is looking for different animals in it and in a conspicuous place will quickly find an appetizing worm or maggot. If the bait sinks into a thick layer of silt, you will have to wait a long time for a bite. Finding the boundary between soft and hard soil is not difficult, for this you just need to slowly stretch the sinker along the bottom surface. The load will be difficult to walk through the mud, and when it reaches the hard bottom, it will become much easier to pull.
In warm weather, carp visit the shallow coastal zone. Most often, such exits occur on a sunny day closer to noon, when the water is already well warmed up. However, fishing near the coast is relevant only in September; later, in places rich in vegetation throughout the summer, there is no point in looking for this fish. There is no food for carp among rotting plants.
A promising place should also be considered a section of a reservoir, at the bottom of which a colony of pearl barley (large bivalve molluscs) lives.
This is one of the carp’s favorite treats. He is not able to break a strong shell, but he always stands somewhere near the hope that some other underwater inhabitant will do it and “share” a delicious lunch.
Tackle for autumn carp fishing
When choosing tackle for carp fishing in a specific body of water, first of all, you should take into account the fishing conditions. For example, for a small elongated pond stocked with carp, long-range gear, such as a donka or a feeder, are poorly suited. Of course, you can throw them, but in a small area, falling of a heavy feeder (sinker) on the water creates too much noise and frightens the fish. In this case, it is advisable to use a fishing rod equipped with a reel with the necessary line supply. On small lakes, this tackle allows you to throw the bait to the nearest promising hole or driftwood, under which carp can hide. It is important to equip the fishing rod with a strong line and a reliable carp hook, since a bite of a trophy specimen is not uncommon in the fall.… The float should not be too bright, otherwise the fish will be afraid of it in the transparent autumn water.
On rivers and reservoirs, where you cannot reach the required depth with a fishing rod, it is recommended to fish with any bottom tackle, starting with a simple zakidushka and ending with a well-equipped feeder. Moreover, a feeder in this category is considered the most effective, since the presence of a feeder significantly increases the chances of a successful fishing outcome. Typically, it consists of:
- heavy class rods up to 4 m long (the test is selected depending on the weight of the rigs used);
- a spacious power spinning reel (3000-4000) with a reliable friction brake and a special baitrunner system designed for catching large fish;
- monofilament line with a cross-section of 0.30 mm (the cord should not be installed, it is very noticeable in the water).
In autumn carp fishing on a feeder, almost all installations show themselves well. In autumn you can successfully fish with such structures as paternoster, loops (symmetrical and asymmetrical), helicopter, inline, “method” feeders work well. The only thing that should not be forgotten is the autumn caution of the target. That is, the installation must be assembled more delicate, sensitive: put the leashes thinner, replace the large feeder with a less voluminous one, remove unnecessary accessories, which you can do without. But you do not need to be overly zealous, the 0.12 mm leash is unlikely to withstand the resistance of a kilogram carp, not to mention real “monsters”.
Special attention should be paid to such an element of the tackle as the tip of the rod.… In autumn, it is better to use fiberglass, they are softer than carbon ones, therefore they are more informative. At the end of the season, carp are not as active as in summer, so increased sensitivity will not hurt.
Until about mid-September, this fish is still interested in vegetable baits such as corn, boiled potatoes or barley, but as the snap gets colder, it switches to animal feed rich in protein. Crawlers work well in cold water, dung worms, maggots, large carp, you can try to catch boilies with animal smells (meat, fish, blood, and so on). At the very end of the season, carp anglers switch to bloodworms.
The colder the water, the less food the carp needs. If at the beginning of autumn you can catch a large whole crawl, then in October only half of it or a smaller worm (dung, scapula) should be put on the hook. For bodies of water where little things do not eat the bait, maggots or a bunch of bloodworms are an excellent option.
The use of vegetable baits in late autumn does not justify itself… The only exception can be paid carp ponds, in which the fish are constantly fed, and they are used to such food.
Groundbait for autumn carp
Regardless of the season, successful carp fishing is impossible without good bait, which shows the fish the way to the bait. The mixture must be prepared at the very beginning of the fishing process, even before the tackle is put on alert, remembering that you don’t need a lot of bait in the fall. For starting feeding, 2-3 small balls or as many full feeders are enough, additional feeding when fishing without a feeder – as needed.
The main requirement for the bait mixture is the correct consistency. The bait should remain in the trough after hitting the surface of the water and actively emerge after the rig is lowered to the bottom. Sweet aromas do not work in autumn, often even scare fish away, so they are undesirable. But the presence of animal components is a prerequisite for successful fishing. You can add bloodworms, maggots, worm crushed with special scissors. It is better to refuse strong store DIPs.
Separately, it must be said about the color of the groundbait. A bright contrasting spot on the bottom surface will cause alertness in the fish, so the mixture must be made to match the color of the bottom. If the porridge is too light, it is darkened with soil taken from the shore of the reservoir.
Autumn carp fishing by month
September… The excellent September bite is due to the good weather. On sunny days, the fish take any bait. If the sky becomes overcast and the wind rises, the carp will hide at a depth, but even there it can be caught, having previously studied the bottom relief. The best time for fishing is in the morning, after lunch the activity decreases. In cold weather and with sudden changes in atmospheric pressure, carp bite badly, the situation cannot be changed either with bait or by experimenting with bait, so you need to plan a trip to the reservoir on those days when weather forecasters promise stability.
October… Groundbait plays a big role this month. It is reasonable to feed the point in advance, for several days before fishing. Thanks to this, the fish will get used to the place, will constantly return to where there is something to eat. Directly during fishing, feed should be less, then the carp will have no choice but to take the bait.
Biting in October is unstable and unpredictable, just like October weather. On sunny days, there are bursts of activity. As a rule, this happens closer to lunchtime, when the water warms up enough. Fishing in the evening is a lottery in which not everyone is lucky.
November… Catching November carp is possible only at great depths, which means that you cannot do without long-range bottom gear. Although at the end of autumn the object is caught in the pits (practically not moving), it can still be fed by adding the maximum amount of animal components to the mixture. The most effective bait at this time of year is bloodworms.
Fishing for carp in late autumn is difficult, and if you take into account the low temperatures, it is also uncomfortable. But avid carp anglers do not pay attention to difficulties, for which they are often rewarded with a decent catch.
