Fishing for chub in spring – tackle and bait

The fishermen are sure that they managed to thoroughly study the habits of all types of fish, including the chub. But the unexpected antics of the lobasty sometimes cause at least bewilderment, and sometimes even inveterate fishing lovers are in a stupor.

When you don’t touch him, he interferes with the process of fishing another fish, makes you draw attention to himself. You start to hunt him purposefully – you are content with a modest catch, and sometimes you even leave the reservoir empty-handed. How can you outwit this handsome river so that catching a chub in the spring becomes effective?

Features of the behavior of the chub at the beginning of the season

Fishing for chub in open water begins in early spring, after the ice melts and this fish leaves its wintering pits. For the first week or two after the river is freed from the ice cover, the forehead is not active. He needs time to recover after a hard winter, to get used to the changed conditions.

Fish in waterHe begins to feed gradually, his appetite grows with the rise in water temperature and reaches a peak around mid-April. Spawning will begin at the end of the month, so the fishermen are in a hurry to enjoy catching this cunning and strong inhabitant of the river.

The spawn can take 4-5 weeks, the terms depend on the climatic conditions of the region and weather factors. If nature does not present surprises in the form of sudden cold snaps, the chub will spawn within 10, maximum 12 days. Well, if the spring is cold, the process of procreation is somewhat delayed.

After spawning, this fish returns to its usual areas, rolling downstream. Most chubs “settle” in big water, in the channels of large rivers, where there is enough food and places for feeding. A smaller part of the livestock remains in the tributaries, or rather, in separate areas with many shelters and a good forage base.

ChaferWith the beginning of the mass flight of the May beetle, the second spring chub zhor begins. By this time, the water is already warm enough, the first aquatic vegetation breaks through, a decline in the spring flood is observed. Lobasty increasingly rises to the surface to feast on tasty insects that accidentally fall into the water. He ignores any other food, even easily available ones. This continues until the last days of May. When there are only a few days left until summer, the object of catch completely switches to summer mode and remains in the upper horizons.

It is better to catch it in clear weather with a slight breeze, preferably in the morning or evening. On cloudy spring days, this fish bites a little worse.

Promising places for catching chub in spring

At the very beginning of spring, chubs stay at the bottom with various shelters, thanks to which they spend less energy fighting the water flow. These can be submerged driftwood, boulders, bottom surface anomalies. You can also hide from a strong jet behind the supports of hydraulic structures or in pockets washed by the current in the steep banks. Above the muddy bottom, this predator rarely comes across; it prefers the soil of a solid structure: stone, gravel, sand, clay.
Stopping places for fish
After spawning, the chub returns to its usual places where it will be possible to catch it until the end of the season. Now you should look for it:

  • on shoals, sand spits, rifts with an abnormal bottom and middle current;
  • at the places where streams and small rivers flow into the main channel, which bring a lot of food;
  • near existing and destroyed hydraulic structures (bridges, dams, water mills, etc.);
  • next to islands and islets dividing the river flow;
  • in enclosed areas with a depth of up to 2-3 meters;
  • in places where many trees grow on the shore, the branches of which hang over the water;
  • over an uneven bottom with ditches and humps, on steep dumps to a depth.

For a forehead, shelter is more important than food. You can hide behind a stone or a deck from large enemies, and the food will float by itself. For example, a fry, which has practically no chance of escaping after being attacked by a chub from an ambush.

Tackle selection

Float rod. Despite the well-known shyness of the chub, you can effectively catch it with a simple fishing rod with a float. It is most convenient to use this maneuverable tackle in the favorite place of the flock – under the trees hanging over the water. A good rod consists of:

  • Fishing rod equipmenta rigid rod 5-7 meters long, which allows you to make quick hooks;
  • main line 0.25 mm;
  • a naturally-colored barrel-shaped float, similar to those that usually float on the surface of the water;
  • sinkers, sinking the float by 2/3 of the body;
  • a leash up to 25 cm long with a smaller diameter than the main line, but not too thin, since the chub always resists desperately and can tear it;
  • hook commensurate with the nozzle.

The best baits for catching chub in the spring are large insects, in particular the May beetle and the nettle caterpillar. It’s a real delicacy for him. It can also be caught on a small live bait, a strip of barley meat, a worm, a bread crust, liver.

In warm weather, it is first advisable to fish out the upper horizons, setting the depth within 20-40 cm. If there are no bites, it is worth lowering the bait to the bottom. The current will slowly drag the weight, and the bait will follow it on a leash, provoking the fish to grip. By the way, trophy specimens are most often found at the bottom.

Donkey on the shoreDonka. Bottom tackle is effective for spawning while the chub is in the bottom layers. It is desirable to mount it on a rod, the shock-absorbing properties of which will help smooth out the aggressive bites of the red-fin fighter. Grandfather’s installation on a reel, too, has not yet been prohibited, it can still be seen on reservoirs. But in this case, it is recommended to tie the line to the nearest bush on the shore.

Since the water in the rivers is muddy due to the spring flood, thick line can be used. However, it must be remembered that the increased area is more strongly influenced by the current, that is, too thick fishing line will carry. Experimentally, the fishermen have determined the golden mean – 0.3 mm. Such a fishing line also resists the stream well, and withstands the powerful resistance of a handsome forehead.

An obligatory element of the donkey with a rod is an inertial or spinning reel. From the first it will hardly be possible to throw the bait to the middle of a wide river, but thanks to the ratchet, there is no need to put a signaling device.

After biting, the fish will begin to pull the line off the reel, which will be signaled by a characteristic sound. A spinning reel will be needed where the prospect points are far from the coast.

The rigging of the donkey is quite simple: a sinker is fixed at the end of the main line, and a leash with a hook is mounted above it. The optimal distance between these elements is 40-50 cm. The length of the leash is selected taking into account the speed of the current: the stronger the flow, the shorter the leash should be (but not less than 30 cm). You can install several leashes with hooks at a certain distance from one another. This will significantly increase the chances of catching a chub, but at the same time, the likelihood of entanglement of the rig will also increase.

Chub on a spoonSpinning. Many anglers prefer to catch chub on a spinning rod in the spring, calling such fishing an interesting, reckless, and sometimes extreme activity. Best suited for him is an ultralight tool that allows you to feed small baits directly to the fish under the nose. As a rule, the bulky spring chub does not pay attention to it.

Small turntables and wobblers that imitate gudgeon, ruff or small roach work well at this time of the year. It is better not to get bright and noisy baits, since in spring the chub is especially fearful and careful. You need to drive the wobbler evenly, at a slow speed, with short pauses. The fish is weakened after the winter, it does not want to chase the frisky fry, therefore, most often the bite occurs at the moment the bait stops.

The models “Comet” and “Aglia long” from the well-known manufacturer of spinning lures Mepps work better with spinners. You can also use their numerous copies of other companies. Like a wobbler, the spinning lure should be driven slowly, pausing near various obstacles (snags, stones) and letting the stream play with the bait.

Microswitches and silicone for forehead fishing are used less often, but in early spring, when the object of fishing is in the bottom horizon, they can be very useful. The main thing is to properly serve them to the predator.

Catching chub in the spring requires certain skills. First you need to find it, then carefully approach the casting distance of the tackle. The hardest thing is to find the bait, except for the period when his diet is almost 100% insects. At this time, May beetles come to the rescue. But at the beginning of the season, one can hope to catch trophy specimens, which at other times of the year do not fall on the hooks of fishermen.
