Fishing for crucian carp in spring with a float rod

No one looks forward to spring like the float fishermen. In anticipation of the first bites of peaceful fish, they do not find a place for themselves: they revise the old tackles that have been repeatedly checked over the winter, buy new ones, go to the stakes and river bays to look at the thickness of the ice, closely follow the weather forecasts. A little more, and the very fishing they dreamed of for three painfully long winter months will begin.

In spring, the number one target for floaters is crucian carp. Some people mistakenly believe that this fish cannot be caught in cold water, so they don’t even think about picking up a fishing rod before mid-May. In reality, this is not the case. The most inveterate representatives of the fishing community have proven in practice that the crucian carp is active already in March. It was at this time, immediately after the freeze-up, that he begins to feed and delight with the first, still uncertain bites. In general, early spring is a rather relative concept. It all depends on the temperature conditions: the warmer, the faster the water warms up and the earlier the biting begins. Sometimes it comes into its own too early, not on a calendar. In such years, on some shallow water bodies, crucian carp takes in early March, and what is most surprising – on vegetable baits! But if winter does not want to give up positions, the temperature indicators jump up and down, then you have to be patient and wait a little.

Fishing for crucian carp in the spring with a float rod differs from similar summer fishing. At this time of year, he is secretive, fearful and very finicky. To catch him, it is not enough to come to the lake with a fishing rod and throw it in the first place that comes across. This approach, apart from disappointment and wasted time, will do nothing.

If in the summer the silver is dispersed throughout the reservoir, then in the spring it stays in certain areas and feeds “on schedule.”

In other words, you need to know exactly where to look for it and when to catch it. In addition, you will need delicate, sensitive tackle and bait appropriate for the season. Without all this, attempts to catch a crucian carp are unlikely to be effective.

Place and time of fishing

The first to wake up are the silvery beauties living in shallow water bodies, where the water warms up earlier. These include ponds, peat bogs and bogs with a depth of no more than a meter, reclamation channels, overgrown floodplain lakes, small river bays with little or no current. Crucian carp begins to feed when the temperature of the habitat reaches 6-7 degrees. They huddle in flocks and rush into shallow water, where their food base has already come to life: bugs, worms, larvae. Here they find not only food, but also the long-awaited warmth.

In the spring, it is not easy to find such a jamb, because there can be many shallow areas in the reservoir. Experienced fishermen are advised to check the following promising points first:

  • Fishermen on the lakeshallows with a depth of no more than half a meter – here the fish have the opportunity to bask in the sun, and at the same time look for nutritious animals in the ground;
  • snags – among snags, a peaceful fish feels invulnerable to predators (depth in this case does not matter, you can warm the back in the upper horizons);
  • border of clean water and last year’s reeds – there is a lot of food here, in case of danger you can sneak into the grass;
  • coastal edges – here the object of catch is pulled closer to spawning.

If the weather is stable, several days in a row does not bring surprises, then the crucian carp can peck from morning to evening. This does not mean that you need to get up neither light nor dawn. There is no need to meet the sunrise on the pond. In the early April morning, the water is still cold, so biting does not begin until 7-8 hours. Towards the end of May, the activity of the silvery will acquire a summer character: it will be better to bite in the morning and evening dawn, it is possible to go out to feed at lunchtime.
Habitats of crucian carp in spring
Fishermen note that the spring bite of crucian carp is influenced by weather factors. Fishing for crucian carp is especially successful in early spring in March-April; it bites well in sunny weather with stable pressure. In late spring, when the real heat comes in, the best choice for fishing is a cloudy day with a slight breeze. A sharp drop in temperature and the north wind negatively affect its activity.

Spring fishing by months

March. During a long winter, water bodies are not soon freed from the ice cover, but the melt water already brings life-giving oxygen to them, thanks to which the crucian carp is activated. You can catch it from ice with winter float gear. If the spring is early, and the sun has melted the ice already in the first half of March, then it’s time to get a swing or Bolognese fishing rod. You should look for luck in deep areas located near the coast.

Carp on a hookApril. In this month, the crucian carp finally leaves the depth, moves to the coastal shallow water and begins to feed intensively. On some reservoirs, the biting is so intense that their banks are completely dotted with floaters. In the middle of spring, the key to success in crucian fishing will be delicate tackle and a small amount of bait, to which he begins to respond precisely in April.

May. The golden time for carp fishing with a fishing rod from the shore. Gaining strength in front of the spawn, he greedily grabs the bait offered by the fishermen, both animal and vegetable. Depending on the weather conditions, spawning may begin in the middle of the month, but this does not mean that the biting will stop completely. Small crucians continue to feed even during the spawning period, which gives great pleasure to those who love float fishing.

Tackle

At the beginning of the season, crucian carp can be successfully caught with a swing rod, match rod and plug. Each of these options has its own advantages.

Fishing rod on the shoreFly fishing rod – a common crucian tackle that floaters love for its ease of use. It consists of a rod without rings, connected to it with a main line connector and blind rigging. Rod length – from 5 meters. A fly rod is not equipped with a reel and does not imply long-range casts, therefore in spring, when the object of fishing is kept in the coastal zone, it is especially relevant.

Match rod – less popular, but also effective. It is most often used in early spring for catching shy and careful fish. The match allows you to implement a wide variety of rig options, but most fishermen prefer to fish with a sliding type float.

Plug fishing rod – has a special design that allows you to adjust the length of the rod by removing or adding knees. Thanks to this feature, it is easy to adapt to different fishing conditions with it. In addition, the plug works great with thin lines and lightweight floats. Another plus is casting accuracy. The bait can be lowered to one point with an error of no more than 5 cm.

Individual elements

Fishing for crucian carp in spring with a float rod requires light and balanced tackle. The match rod is equipped with a small spinning reel with a shallow spool, the height of the sides of which does not exceed 2 mm. It is desirable that the friction brake is installed at the rear, this simplifies the adjustment when playing trophy fish. The diameter of the main line is selected taking into account the average size of the object to be caught in a particular water body. After winter, it is not able to provide strong resistance, so it makes no sense to put monofilament thicker than 0.18 mm.

Separately, it should be said about the bite alarm. Float characteristics such as color, shape and capacity are of great importance. Color is important for both the fisherman and the fish. The lower part should be inconspicuous, and the above-water, on the contrary, bright enough, otherwise you can miss a powerful promising bite. For fishing on clear days, floats with red and black antennas are better suited, and if the sky is overcast, then white or light green tops will be more noticeable.

The sensitivity of the float directly depends on its shape. The most sensitive are elongated products (in the form of a rod, cigar, spindle), which practically do not create resistance when biting. As for the carrying capacity, floats with a working weight of 1-2 g are usually used for spring fishing. This is quite enough for fishing at a shallow depth and a distance of up to 10 meters. Heavier ones are used in some cases, namely in deep-water areas, for long-distance casts, in windy weather. They surround the float with lead pellets, spreading them along the main line in order to increase the sensitivity of the rig.

Next comes a thin leash, the length of which does not exceed 25 cm. Some anglers believe that you can catch a hungry spring carp without a leash. They tie a hook at the end of the main line and, stepping back a few centimeters, set the weights. This is a gross mistake, since the water is clearer in spring than at any other time of the year. Of course, they will catch something too, but the number of bites will be minimal.

The hooks for the float rod are matched to the attachment. If you plan to fish with bloodworms, oparisha or a miniature lump of mastic, then it is better to use hooks starting from number 12 and above. For red worm, pearl barley, corn, numbers 8, 9 and 10 are suitable.

Catchy baits and baits

During the three spring months, the taste preferences of the object of fishing change. Immediately after the ice melts, he needs protein food, therefore he bites exclusively on baits of animal origin. The bloodworm goes first, followed by the maggot, and when the water warms up a little, the gourmet should be offered a dung worm. If the fish drags it by the tail, but cannot swallow it, then it is recommended to serve such bait in portions – to plant it in pieces.

Dough on a hookFrom about the end of April (in different regions in different ways), the crucian carp begins to show interest in vegetable baits. During this period, lovers of crucian carp fishing go to reservoirs with pea sticks, semolina dough, boiled pearl barley, corn, but just in case they take worms. You never know what this fastidious will take.

If the bite is very weak, experienced anglers try to combine different baits. For example, a worm with peas. The first attracts fish with its mobility, the second – with its appetizing smell.

Lure

This is a very important stage in fishing, on which its outcome depends. Wise fishermen say: if you don’t know how to feed crucian carp in spring, it is better to fish without bait at all. The fact is that at the very beginning of the season it is easy to overfeed silver or, even worse, to scare away from the place of fishing with some too “powerful” ingredient like coffee or vanilla. That is why in early spring the bait mixture consists of only two components – the coastal soil and the living component (bloodworm, crushed worm). Well, porridge with cake can be used closer to summer, when it completely switches to summer mode.

Groundbait ballsAlso, the composition and consistency of bait depends on the type of reservoir. If crucian carp is not the only inhabitant, it may not have time to come up to feed. Until his approach, roach or bleak will gather at the feeding point, and he will stay away and watch this feast. In this case, it is worth preparing groundbait with larger fractions that are too tough for small fish.

There are lakes where the crucian carp lives in splendid isolation. As the saying goes, there is no other fish, no problem. For feeding it, a regular mixture without unnecessary frills, which gave an effect in previous seasons, is suitable.

Note for beginners. The desire to come off on the first trip and surprise loved ones with a large number of fish caught is quite understandable. Floatmen have been waiting for this moment since autumn. But we must not forget that crucian carp is not on the list of weedy species. If a small carp is caught, it is better to let it go back into the reservoir, let it grow to the required size.

This attitude will allow you to keep the number of crucian carp, will give you the opportunity to enjoy your favorite hobby in the future. Otherwise, boring virtual fishing in fishing simulators awaits us all.
