Fishing for perch in spring
Perch is caught all year round. In winter, fishing for him takes place with varying success, but after the opening of reservoirs, he is one of the first to get active and take lures designed for fishing in open water. Fishermen are preparing for this happy moment in advance: they tidy up the tackle, check the spinners, wobblers and silicones, get spring fishing equipment from the far corners.
Fishing for perch in the spring begins in March, and many striped fishermen claim that it was at this time that they managed to get the largest trophies. But at the start of the season, the predator’s bite is unstable, it is influenced by a number of factors, such as changeable weather and low water temperature. In April, he finally comes out of the winter sluggish state and briskly takes on the proposed baits. Fishing for perch in May will be no less effective. True, in the second half of spring, humpbacks are encountered much less often, small and medium specimens prevail in the catches.
Characteristics of the object of fishing
The perch is an insatiable, always hungry predator. When he goes out to feed, he grabs everything that fits in his mouth. For such greed and vigor, he is disliked by floaters aiming at peaceful fish. Sometimes small perches literally do not allow to cast the line, grabbing the bait even before it reaches the bottom. But when large specimens sit on the hook one by one, the perch activity no longer causes discontent.
Perch ranks second after roach in terms of prevalence in our region. In the fishing literature, its maximum size is indicated – 50 cm in length, and its weight – up to 2 kg. In fact, such giants are very rare, so individuals weighing 0.5-1 kg are already considered trophy. Once Sabaneev wrote that the largest perches live in Lake Onega, and today rather large specimens are caught in the Volga basins.
The predator spawns early, in some areas already in March. A few days after the spawn, he begins to actively recuperate. This network is the notorious zhor that fishermen love to talk about.
It will not last long, so it is important not to miss this period of grace.
Search for a predator
In early spring, while the water is still cold, the object of the catch adheres to the bottom horizons and practically does not rise to the surface. Usually it hides from pike and other large predatory fish behind the edges and small dumps, it can stand in hollows with a slow or swirling current. He is also attracted by snags and supports of hydraulic structures. High chances of success will be in the places where tributaries and streams flow into the main channel. On the lakes, minke whales concentrate near local bottom anomalies: pits, grooves, bumps and other irregularities.
Spawning begins in early April, when the water warms up to 7-8 degrees (approximately for most regions). River perch is the first to spawn, since rivers are free of ice earlier. At this time, you can catch its lake counterpart, which is just getting ready to spawn. Small and medium striped predators gather in large schools and migrate to spawning grounds – shallow, quiet areas where there is little or no current. Humpbacks, on the other hand, keep apart or in a group of no more than a dozen individuals. The former should be sought in shallow water with fallen branches and last year’s vegetation at the bottom, and the latter at depths of up to 4 meters. The spawn of a large perch will begin a little later, but while it behaves cautiously, it rarely approaches the shore, so it is not easy to catch it.
In May, striped ones are already chasing fry with might and main at the very surface, thereby betraying their presence. Most often, such cauldrons can be seen early in the morning and before sunset. If there are no visible signs, then it is worth looking for the predator on rifts, shallows, in the shallow coastal zone, in places where the first underwater vegetation breaks through, next to flooded bushes.
In sunny weather, the predator goes out to hunt only periodically.
The strongest bursts of activity are noted at dawn – morning and evening. If the weather is cloudy, then biting can continue from early morning until dark.
Spring fishing for perch with a float rod
On a warm spring day, perch is well caught with float gear. I must say that in the spring a fishing rod with a float often brings bigger catches than a spinning rod. As a rule, it consists of:
- lightweight and comfortable telescopic rods 4, 5 or 6 meters long;
- a simple spinning reel (there are no special requirements for it, since there is no need to do wiring in this type of fishing);
- main line 0.2 mm;
- a float of any shape (everyone puts a float they are used to, the main thing is to load it correctly);
- thin leash with a breaking load of 2-2.5 kg;
- pellet sinkers;
- a hook that matches the size of the bait (the striped robber is not afraid of excessively large hooks, but it is better not to put such hooks, otherwise he will simply rip off the bait).
What to catch? A predator hungry for the winter takes on any live bait, be it a bloodworm, maggot or a worm. You can also offer him a small live bait (for example, Verkhovka). The secret to the success of float fishing for perch lies in the constant play with the bait. To do this, you need to raise and lower the rig, maintaining certain pauses between lifts. With an active bite, the pauses are short, and if there are no bites for a long time, their duration should be increased. This method resembles winter fishing, only the tackle is large. Sometimes it is useful to experiment with the depth of fishing, because a perch flock can stand not only at the bottom, but also in the middle horizon.
As mentioned above, large perches are cautious in spring, being afraid to come too close to the shore. You can get them not only with spinning, any kind of bottom tackle (with a rod, on a reel, and so on) is quite suitable for this.
Special attention should be paid to the rig, since the result of such fishing depends on it. First, the sinker must be sliding so that the angler can see the predator touching the bait. Its weight is selected taking into account the strength of the current. The second is the leash. The optimal length is 30 cm, if the flow is weak, the leash will have to be shortened. It is necessary to ensure that the current moves the bait, makes it more attractive. For greater effect, a foam ball is placed on the hook, thanks to which the bait will “float” above the bottom, attracting the perch from a long distance. These can be the same maggots or worms, but the most catchy is the small live bait.
Fishing for perch on spinning in spring
In the spring, when spawning bans are in effect, including navigation is prohibited, many fishermen prefer to spin perch. On large rivers, where the likelihood of biting a pike or other large predator is possible, light tackle is used, and on small bodies of water (narrow rivers, lakes) it is more convenient to wield a delicate ultralight spinning rod. Such a tool has the following characteristics:
- rod – lightweight and at the same time quite strong blank with dough up to 15 g 2.4 meters long:
- coil – high-quality inertialess model, providing smooth running and smooth winding (spool size for light – 2000, for ultralight – 1500);
- line – braid with a diameter of 0.18-0.2 mm.
Why braided cord? It has several indisputable advantages, the main among which are high sensitivity and the ability to withstand serious loads, including during hooks. In spring, snags are more common than at any other time of the year. The flood is to blame, which changes the character of the bottom. Driftwood can appear anywhere, even where the bottom surface has always been clean before.
Artificial baits for fishing perch on a spinning in the spring from the shore can be very different. Let’s start with the simple ones.
For beginners, who have heard enough stories about the spring gorge of a striped predator, it seems that catching it with a spoon is not particularly difficult. In fact, there are some nuances here.
Recall that in the spring, the probability of a hook increases, while the overwhelming majority of oscillators do not belong to non-hooks.
In addition, in March, the perch is still not active enough, therefore, it often ignores oscillating spoons with a sluggish play. That is why in the first half of spring it is advisable to give preference to turntables of bright colors, which create more noise when moving and are better visible in turbid water. If the choice still fell on oscillating spoons, then you should not use too large “pieces of iron”, which the object of fishing will ignore for the reason that he cannot swallow them.
This is a great option for those who do not really know what lures to fish with. A set of wobblers with different performance characteristics will allow you to fish at any depths, select an effective game depending on the predator’s mood. Lures from the “minnow” category are suitable for twitching, and shads and rolls work well on even drive, as well as wire with jerk elements. Generally speaking, light wobblers 3-5 cm long and weighing up to 10 g are used to fish spring perch. Models with a working horizon of 0.5-1 m are considered universal.
Twisters, vibro-tails and various silicone exotics have become the only weapon against the striped robber for many spinning reels. The only exceptions are fantasy imitations of frogs and crustaceans with legs, tentacles and other additions. In nature, perch does not feed on such. He can grab a rubber octopus only by accident, confusing it with other animals.
In the spring, silicone fish and worms are more relevant than ever, especially the so-called flavorful edible. If the predator misses such a bait, he still won’t leave it alone and will definitely try again. He can chase her to the very shore, bite, throw and attack again until he is on the hook. With edible silicone, the fisherman is guaranteed a good catch. Perch is also actively interested in ordinary rubber. If the place is chosen correctly, but there are no bites, it is worth experimenting with the speed of the bait and its animation. There are several effective techniques in the arsenal of microjig lovers: step wiring, uniform, American, for demolition, pendulum, dotted and others.
With the arrival of spring, many anglers are patiently waiting for real warmth to plunge headlong into their favorite pastime. And then suddenly it turns out that it’s summer already, and fishing has remained in the plans. Why wait so long, because there is a perch that starts to peck as soon as the ice melts!
