Spinning ide fishing
Ide is a fish of the carp family. In appearance it is very similar to a chub. It differs from it in smaller scales, sometimes with a golden tint, a more flattened body and a light back, a smaller mouth and eyes with a yellow iris.
By way of life and nutrition, it is a pronounced predator, although most fishermen consider it a peaceful fish. In fact, the ide is omnivorous. Its diet includes both plant foods (grains, legumes) and animals (juvenile fish, frogs, worms, molluscs, insects, etc.). And in the peaceful it was recorded by fishermen who catch it with bottom tackle, using a worm or corn and peas as bait. The tackle is simple: a fishing line, a sliding compact weight (so that it does not flop on the water when casting) and a 30 cm long leash with a hook from the seventh to the tenth number according to the domestic classification. Feeder troughs are not used, they flop heavily. But, nevertheless, the place of fishing is sometimes lured. And yet – the most fascinating spinning ide fishing, although not everyone succeeds.
For example, on the Lower Volga, locals are often found who are very surprised to learn that ide is quite successfully caught on spinning. It feeds mainly at the bottom, and only in summer, or on warm days in autumn, does it come to the surface of the water in the evenings, hunting for flying insects. Ide is a very cautious and shy fish, so not everyone and not often can see him hunting for fry. He feels good walking along the shore and perfectly hears human speech. Since in summer fish fry are kept near the coast, then his hunt for it can be seen only from afar, from somewhere from a steep, for example. In autumn, the fry goes to the depths, carrying away the ide, as well as other predators.
The ide has a reflex memory, we can say that it has a “flock intelligence”. This is expressed in the ability to connect different “events” with each other. For example, the game and the appearance of the bait with a person who appeared on the shore and the “noise” he makes, comparing this with the disappearance of his fellows. Although he has periods, for example, before spawning, when he loses all caution and is caught literally like a freak. However, he is caught like a freak in those places where a person’s foot rarely steps. In such cases, an experienced spinning player is able to literally knock out the entire flock. But, fortunately, such a phenomenon can no longer be found in pressurized reservoirs due to its inherent “flock intelligence”. He learned to recognize popular catchy baits, sometimes completely oblivious to them, and at the same time willingly responding to some cheap fake.
One has only to catch one ide incorrectly, as the whole flock begins to ignore this bait. It is wrong – this is when, in the heat of excitement, they are trying to immediately quickly fish out the pecked fish, at the same time it begins to somersault and violently rush from side to side, alerting the entire flock.
That’s right – this is when, after hooking on a stretched line, you have to wait, so that the current will “beat off” a little to the side, and then slowly “pump out”, winding up the line, without hurrying and without forcing the fishing. It is not advisable to laze on the shore when fishing for ide, and in general, just like when fishing for chub, it is necessary to observe camouflage.
Spinning gear for ide
Tackle for spinning ide fishing must be of high quality and completely serviceable. The whistling roller of the line guide, noisy gears, clicking clutch – all this noise is perfectly transmitted under the water, especially along the braid, therefore, when fishing for ide, monofilament line is preferable to braid. There is less noise from it and thanks to its extensibility, coupled with the flexibility of the rod blank, it promotes soft fishing. This statement has been tested more than once on various fishing trips, and always, with the same bait, the line caught the braid, and the ide did not want to catch the tackle with a “noisy” reel at all.
The baits for catching ide are not chosen large, since his mouth is smaller than that of the same chub or asp. The optimal size is number 2 according to the Mepps classification, but it also eats the third number. And in case of wind or strong currents, a larger and heavier spoon will be preferable. Usually lures of this size weigh from 3 to 7 grams, so spinning is desirable with the lower limit of the dough from 2 grams, although I started perfectly mastering ide fishing with a dough of 5 ÷ 20 grams.
The length of the spinning rod is chosen depending on the presence of vegetation on the shore: it should allow you to cast the bait without breaking the camouflage and not catching the grass or bushes. For me, the most convenient were (until they broke down during transportation) budget Shimano Catana with a test of 1 ÷ 11 grams and 3 ÷ 14 grams, lengths respectively 2m 10cm and 2m 70cm, both of medium action. I wouldn’t recommend fast action. Although the bait is felt better with such a system, playing with it is harder, the hole from the hook breaks more strongly, which increases the likelihood of fish coming off, and after that the likelihood of stopping the bites. I use fishing line with a diameter of 0.22 ÷ 0.25 mm, braid with a diameter of 0.1 ± 0.02 mm.
I don’t bother too much about the manufacturer, everyone praises what they catch with. Although I still prefer PowerPro to braid. In principle, any reel will do: the main thing is that it does not make noise during wiring and fishing, and also corresponds to the weight of the stick. From the budget, I really like Ryobi Ecusima: quiet, lightweight, reliable, with even line laying and with a system for preventing self-tipping of the line’s bow. I really liked the Daiwa Regal XI, the leader in the number of fishing trips and years of service, but after losing a number of my favorite lures due to spontaneous dropping of the line’s bow during casting, I was sent to a well-deserved rest.
Spinning ide baits
Among ide baits, spinning spoons are in the first place: Mepps Comet Black Fury with a yellow petal and green or orange specks on a black background, and Myran Toni with a yellow petal, orange core and red edge on a tee weighing 5g, 7g and 12g.
The second spoon is very compact and long-range for a spinner, while 12 grams not only does not scare away ide, but also can bring by-catch as a pike perch. Turntables from other manufacturers also work, the main thing is that they start from half a turn with slow wiring and go in the right horizon.
In second place I have the oscillating spoons from Acme: Ko wobbler (favorite) silver with a green stripe and yellow with red, Kastmaster silver and gold, and Litlle Cleo in the same colors. The weight category of the vibrators is also not higher than 12 grams. In third place I have cranky wobblers: Chabby from Jackall, Masu Masters, Tsuribito Baby crank, Baby Grizero from Megabass for surface splash fishing. I put microjig in fourth place, but this is more likely because I rarely practice it at all. Many, I think, would put him in first or second place. Any twisters up to 6 cm in size are suitable for jig, but they must be either edible or ordinary, but with the application of an attractant. I have never caught an ide on non-edible (or without an attractant) rubber, although the number of such fishing trips is still not enough for full-fledged statistics. As well as to determine the preferred colors: he took on all sorts, and did not take on all sorts.
The fittings must correspond to the tackle (breaking load of the line). Carabiner and swivel are preferable from thin wire. I do not use a leash when fishing for ide, he is afraid of it. If there is a pike in the place of fishing, it is better to first try to catch it with pike lures with a leash, and then, with more or less peace of mind, start the main fishing without a leash using ulcerous lures.
Catching in the wiring
Catching ide in the wiring depends on the place of its deployment, but in any cases, do not forget that it takes better when catching upstream, that is, wiring is carried out downstream. It is also not bad when driving for demolition, and sometimes against the stream. To select the right wiring, knowledge of the reservoir is not unimportant.
Ide keeps under water near any shelters and always on the current. These can be boulders at the bottom, driftwood, branches, structures, grass, pits on the spits, bushes under the shore. And the task during the posting is to take the bait as close as possible to the shelter and make the ide see or feel it. To do this, after casting the bait, the time required to submerge it to the desired depth is counted. Accordingly, a bait is chosen that can go slowly at the bottom without catching it. With such a slow wiring, it is useful to make short, no more than a second, pauses. During such a pause, the game breaks down, and very often such a breakdown provokes the ide to bite.
When up-streaming, such pauses often lead to hooks and loss of bait. Therefore, in places of probable hooks, it is better to fish with lures with thin hooks.… For example, Mepps Black Fury, when hooked with one hook of the tee, can be saved due to the extension of the hook, but the Ko wobbler with a thicker tee is irretrievably lost in this case. At the same time, both spoons are catchy, but the first one is cheaper and sometimes it can be saved. After catching several specimens in one place, it is useful to change the fishing point or change the bait. You can also just pause for five to ten minutes to calm the flock, and then continue fishing.
When playing, do not forget that the ide loves to somersault, and if the tee is thick and hooked with one pry, then the puncture site may break, which can lead to fish coming off. It is good if this happens near the coast, but if the gathering happened in a place where fish accumulate, then it is better to go look for another place to fish. To prevent this, first you need to turn the spinning rod along the coast, then control the moment of pulling and try to redirect the momentum with the spinning movement and take the fish to the side, preventing it from tumbling. With the accumulation of experience, these actions come automatically, and it is not easy to explain them in words.
If you learn to do everything correctly, you will definitely be rewarded by catching this handsome man. And when the moment comes that after the trophy is brought to the coastal shallow, it will begin to fight, and from the depths to this “battle” the brothers will jump out in the hope of profit from the fry scattering in panic, and begin to circle, wondering where the fry have gone, – here you can certainly no doubt that the science of ide fishing has been comprehended and all that remains is to improve it, passing on your experience to others.
