Spinning pike in spring
With the arrival of spring, spinningists become more active. If the ice is still standing, they carefully prepare the tackle, and when the rivers and lakes are freed from it, they go to catch the predator. Sometimes on the “fish” reservoirs there are so many fans of spinning fishing that the spoon has nowhere to fall. Someone is targeting minke whales, someone is hunting chub, but most fishermen purposefully catch pike, which is one of the first to switch to summer mode.
Fishing for pike in the spring with a spinning rod is full of surprises. Even with experienced anglers, it goes with varying success, because a lot of factors affect the bite of the toothed tooth, such as unstable weather, the specificity of water bodies, the capriciousness of the predator during this period of the year. Although spring is considered the best time to hike pike, it is not always possible to get it. Many newcomers, who have heard enough stories that a hungry spring predator is caught on its own, will be deeply disappointed. Not everything is so simple with toothy, especially in those reservoirs where there is not much of it. In order for the coveted trophy to hang on the kukan, you first need to find the place of its deployment and correctly give it the bait.
Pike behavior at the beginning of the season
Many spinning anglers claim that the spring activity of the predator makes such fishing unforgettable. The only time when it almost completely stops pecking is the period of spawn and a week and a half after it. This fish spawns at negligible depths, sometimes at some 20-30 centimeters in the middle of last year’s coastal vegetation. It would seem that here she is, just reach out and lower the bait in front of her nose. However, spinning pike in early spring during spawning is a useless exercise, she is busy procreation and does not pay any attention to food.
That is why it is advisable to get to the river even before spawning, when a hungry and aggressive predator grabs the bait on almost every cast. You can start probing the reservoir already in early March, even if it is only partially free of ice. A short pre-spawning meal is about to begin, and this moment cannot be missed. Trying to recover as quickly as possible after a long winter, the pike attacks any bait. Even cheap Chinese models, to which, after spawning, she can easily stop responding.
Those who are late for the pre-spawning gorge should not be upset, after the spawn and a short rest, the pike will again become vulnerable. A small herb starts to peck first, and larger specimens are gradually activated. Spring zhor promises many pleasant moments for fishermen.
The only thing that can interfere with successful fishing is a spill, because of which it is not always possible to get close to the water in promising places. This problem is typical for many bodies of water, so fishing for pike in the spring with a spinning rod from the shore is somewhat complicated.
On separate rivers and lakes, individuals of different ages spawn at different times, which is why the eggs are stretched for a month or even more. However, this does not lead to long-term biting; on the contrary, in such places you can fish without interruption. While a small pike lays eggs, a large one is caught, then the “youth” go to spawning grounds, and the trophy specimens that have fulfilled their duty begin to actively feed in order to restore strength.
Where to look for pike
Throughout the spring, a fat-eating predator can be found in any corner of the reservoir, but it would be wrong to choose a fishing spot at random. She, like a shepherd, follows her “herd” of fry, so there will be more chances of success where there is a high concentration of small fish. In addition, it is necessary to take into account the features of the bottom relief, water temperature and a number of other factors. Where can the object of fishing be in the spring? Let’s analyze it by month.
March. After the ice melts, the pike does not rush into the coastal zone to chase small fish with fish, as some anglers claim. She is in no hurry to leave the depth; displacement in shallow water occurs gradually, over several days after the opening of the water. During this period, it can be caught on channel edges, outlets from deep pits, at the confluence of streams and small rivers, in areas with a slow current, near whirlpools. The first bites near the shore most often occur where there are submerged driftwood and bushes.
April. At the beginning of this month, spawning ends, after which the pike gets sick, and then the spring zhor begins. At first, she stays in the spawning grounds and waits for peaceful fish that come here with the same purpose – to lay eggs. Such a food base allows the toothy to quickly recover. Having improved their health and gaining energy, the pike livestock begins to disperse throughout the reservoir.
Now this predator can be caught wherever it has the opportunity to attack from cover: in snags, near islands of last year’s dry grass, next to bridge supports, and so on.
May. The warmth of May brings changes: the spill ends, aquatic plants wake up, spawned white fish gather at summer camps. The predator follows her. Most of all she is attracted by flocks of bleak and roach. Where this forage fish is spinning, there is always a pike nearby. The paradox is that small fish are looking for various shelters to hide from their pursuer, and he, in turn, uses them for surprise attacks from an ambush.
Choosing tackle for pike fishing in the spring
There are a number of requirements for spinning for pike fishing in the spring. This is high accuracy and casting distance, sufficient sensitivity to control the bait, strength, thanks to which the tackle copes with the jerks of aggressive prey. All of these qualities are met by spinning, consisting of:
- a fast action lightweight carbon rod with a test range of 7-30g (recommended length 2.4m);
- a spinning reel working on at least 5 bearings, with a spool up to 3000 and a friction clutch with fine adjustment;
- the main fishing line – monofilament with a diameter of 0.2-0.3 mm or braids of 0.12-0.16 mm (the thickness of the thread depends on the size of the pike you plan to catch);
- thin metal leash up to 20 cm long.
Shop leads are preferred as they are equipped with swivels and carabiners. Of course, if you try hard, you can do this at home. The swivel helps to avoid twisting, and with the help of the carabiner you can change the bait in a matter of seconds.
There is no need to use coarse spinning rods. In winter, pike eats little, weakens, becomes lethargic, therefore, at the beginning of the open water season, it is not able to provide serious resistance. Sometimes it seems that the spoon has caught a bunch of grass, but under the shore in the water a silhouette of a predator looms, which walks as if dead. That is why it is advisable to use more delicate tackle in spring fishing.
Effective techniques and baits
It was mentioned above that a hungry pike is indiscriminate in food, it grabs most of the popular baits without much hesitation, but not all. She can ignore large spinners, wobblers and silicones, especially before spawning, when the belly is full of caviar. It is much easier for her to catch up, swallow and digest small, slow-swimming prey. Therefore, the main principle of spring spinning fishing is the use of small lures and slow retrieves.
Many anglers prefer to guide the lure evenly. Of course, this simple technique will give results, but it is inferior to jig and wiring with twitching elements. It is about pauses and twitching of the rod tip. In the latter case, it is worth equipping the spinning rod with a braided line in order to better control the artificial fish. When it comes to jigging pike in the spring, this technique is unrivaled. During the pause, the bait will smoothly sink to the bottom, imitating a tired fish. Such a “lazy” game will definitely interest a predator.
All types of bait are relevant in spring. A good catch will be provided by oscillating spoons. During the spring zhora, the pike often picks up the vibrator immediately after casting, when it sinks into the water column. If there is no blow on the lowering, you can start posting and be ready for an attack from a shelter, past which the spoon will swim.
Turntables are even more annoying. The similarity to a fish is provided by the main element – a rotating petal, which, in addition to shine, also attracts with sound. Experienced spinners advise using small spinning lures equipped with a petal in the shape of a willow leaf for spring fishing for pike from the shore.
Another good option is silicone, both regular and edible. Silicone baits come in many varieties, from passive worms (slugs) to double-tailed twisters, crustaceans and frogs. In the spring, they are all to the taste of the pike.
Wobblers represent a separate category. These are lures for real professionals, as they require some skill and mastery of more complex techniques. There are floating wobblers, sinkers, suspenders, and each type has its own feeding method. According to most spinning anglers, in the spring the toothy never abandons the minnow, sheds and rolls work well, closer to summer you can successfully fish with surface poppers.
Some fishermen practice spinning with live bait. The role of bait is usually assigned to a small roach, rudd or crucian carp. This method is not very popular for several reasons: the fish often flies off the hook when casting, after contact with a metal leash, it loses its visual appeal, and a large supply of live bait is needed.
Spring is a great time for spinning pike. This wonderful time will be replaced by summer, and with it the heat, which discourages the predator’s appetite. Therefore, it is worth hurrying, before you have time to blink an eye, as three spring months fly by.
