Bleak fishing – tackle and baits
Bleak has divided the fishing community into two camps. Some consider her catching bleak interesting and sporting, while others hate this fish for its small size, large numbers and incredible gluttony. Quite often, she interferes with fishing and nullifies all the plans of the fisherman, eating the bait on the hook. Neither the change of place, nor the increase in the bait, nor the curses sent in its direction help. Just throw in the tackle, and the ever-hungry bleak is already there. Eagerly pounces on the worm and begins to fiddle with its tip, biting off piece by piece. I want to spit on everything and go home. Well, do not catch this little thing!
And yet there are anglers who are ready to pull this fish from the city pier for hours. They are attracted not only by the huge number of bites that bleak gives, but also by its excellent gastronomic qualities. Fatty, tender, tasty … in dried form it is generally a delicacy. What you need for a cold beer.
It is also good after frying in boiling oil, but only two or three dozen “heads” are not enough for such a dish. In this regard, the question arises: how to catch a lot of bleak? The most effective sports methods, but more on that later. First, let’s figure out where to look for it.
Place and time of fishing
Usually bleak is dispersed throughout the coastal area. You can find it in shallow water, in areas with medium depths and above great depths. The latter option is preferable for fishing, since having enough room for maneuver, the fish is not too cautious and approaches the shore very close. In bad weather (rainy or windy days), it leaves shallow areas, and in deep ones it simply sinks into the lower horizons and remains within reach of the fisherman.
When choosing a place for fishing, it should be borne in mind that, unlike many other types of fish, bleak prefers clean water, therefore it keeps away from aquatic and emerging vegetation. In such conditions, it is very difficult to disguise. To stay unnoticed by the shy fish, it is better to stop where there are small ripples in the water. Bad, but still a disguise.
Bleak fishing is truly a sport, if not speed fishing. You will definitely not be bored with her. In this regard, the place of fishing should be carefully prepared so that nothing interferes and does not distract from the exciting process. First of all, it is a convenient placement of tackle, bait, bait boxes and additional accessories.
It doesn’t hurt to equip a comfortable seat. If there is no special fishing chair, then you can use a piece of board or thick foam. These materials are even more suitable than a folding fishing chair, because the lower the angler sits, the closer the flock of bleaks will come to the shore.
Many fishermen, following the established tradition, go to bleak early in the morning. Meanwhile, there is no need to wake up at 4 in the morning. You can arrive at the reservoir at noon and fish calmly until 19.00-20.00. With a competent approach, this time will be enough to get a little tired and get the desired portion of pleasure to catch a capacious bucket of fish.
Bleak is not a bream or carp; to catch it effectively, you need the appropriate tackle for catching bleak. Fishermen call such a bait rod. Firstly, it is a tough and at the same time lightweight rod with a sensitive tip, 3-4 meters long. It is impractical to use longer sticks, since it is physically difficult to wave them constantly.
With a good bite, the fish grabs the nozzle when it sinks in the water column, so it is advisable to put a float with a low carrying capacity (for example, 0.5 g) and pick up a proportionate weight for it. This will slow down the falling speed of the lure and increase the chances of a bite immediately after casting.
The stability of the float plays an important role. He must always remain upright, regardless of the current and wave, to clearly capture bites. Stability is also necessary in cases where the bleak is almost not interested in a stationary bait, so you have to wiggle it with twitching of the rod tip.
The most suitable for such fishing are floats in the form of a drop or cone with a long keel. They are made from foam, balsa, cork or some other light material, this is not so important.
The universal bleach rig has the following set:
- mono line with a diameter of 0.08-0.1 mm;
- bottom sinker weighing 0.02 g;
- sharp hook No. 17 or No. 18 (according to domestic numbering 2.5 or 3).
Anglers who have gained experience in catching bleak with a float rod recommend placing hooks with a long forend and a small barb, made of high quality wire. Any color can be.
If you prepare in advance several rigs with floats of different carrying capacities (for example, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.6 g), then fishing will not waste time on re-equipping the tackle if necessary. After the first casts, it will become clear that it is better to use an arsenal from a prepared home.
It should be said right away that the usual casts from under the arm on such a fishing are inappropriate. It is necessary to cast from behind, while the movement of the rod should be sharp. Thanks to this method, the line will lie on the water surface stretched along its length, and the rig will not get tangled. In addition, with such a cast, the wind does not blow it away, which means that the bait will be delivered exactly to the specified place.
Having thrown the tackle, you should not immediately relax, take a comfortable position and begin to carefully admire the float. After casting, you can take advantage of the natural curiosity of the bleak and try to lure it by tossing the rig over the water a couple of times. This fish is attracted by everything that falls on the water, so it will definitely react to such a trick. If during the first minute not a single bite occurred, it is better to throw the tackle in the direction of 30 centimeters or try to change the fishing depth (raise-lower the float).
Often bleak gives itself away with light pokes of the bait, but for some reason refuses to swallow it. Such touches are clearly felt on a rig with a total weight of up to 0.4 g. How to provoke it to a full bite? Usually, a slow, steady drive or slow pulling with short jerks helps.
What to catch bleak
Most often, this fish is caught with the classic bait – maggot. In order for fishing to be successful and bring a good catch, you need to take with you larvae of different sizes. Those that are larger are suitable for active biting, but if the bleak suddenly starts to pick and choose, then you can switch to smaller ones. In the case when the bites are too careful, it is better to catch with another catchy larva – bloodworms. Sometimes a miniature bread roll works well.
How to hook maggots correctly? If you hook it onto the skin at one end, it will wriggle seductively. But this method has one significant drawback – the fish constantly manages to pluck the bait. Therefore, it is better to pierce the larva through so that the sting comes out. With this option, there will be much less idle sweeps, and the bait on the hook will last longer.
Bloodworms are usually planted in the same way as during winter fishing on a jig. That is, they pierce it through and through in the thick part. The “half-ring” and “ring-shaped” methods for bleaching are of little use. Unlike the scourge or roach, this fish is more led by the natural behavior of the bait, and not by its smell. Of course, it is easier to rip off a bloodworm hooked onto the tip, but if the angler does not rush and waits 3 seconds after the bite, the fish will surely swallow the larva completely and the hook will be crowned with success.
As far as bread and dough are concerned, according to many fishermen, they are the best bait. Bleak really loves flour products and bites them perfectly, but the speed of catching suffers.
If you can catch up to 10 individuals per maggot, then balls of dough or bread crumb have to be rolled after each sweep, regardless of whether it is effective or not.
Without bait, you can not even count on a decent catch of bleak. The components of the mixture collect the fish at one point, create competition and thereby force the object of the catch to more actively grab food. Including the one on the hook.
There is only one requirement for the bait for catching bleak – it should sink as slowly as possible. Wheat bread crumbs have this property. Also, milk powder, ground cake and a small amount of cocoa powder will not interfere with the composition. A good groundbait is obtained on the basis of store-bought cookies ground with a coffee grinder. You can also use any factory groundbait for white fish, if you grind it to a powdery state beforehand.
The dry mixture is diluted to the required consistency with water taken from the reservoir. After casting, the lump of bait immediately disintegrates and forms a persistent cloudy spot. The longer it “sags” in the water column, the more bleak will collect.
The first three handfuls are thrown behind the intended fishing point in a row: a meter or a half from it, the second is a little closer, and the third is almost where the float will be. This “path” will attract fish from a long distance, where you cannot throw the bait. Then two or three more lumps need to be thrown directly into the place of fishing. The nearest flock will instantly react to the bursts and gather at the point.
Falling groundbait, like any other small objects, does not frighten the bleak at all, but, on the contrary, attracts its attention. Therefore, in the process of fishing, you should periodically toss small lumps. Experienced fishermen literally catch this nimble fish with both hands: they feed one, and the other hook.
The main rule of feeding is accuracy. You cannot scatter the bait mixture over the area, otherwise the fish will scatter. The balls must fall in the same place. The feeding rate is established empirically, and then strictly observed. For example, a small lump after two caught fish. Since most of the bait will sink to the bottom, you can try increasing the fishing depth. It is quite possible that larger specimens will peck below.
The dimensions of the bleak are more than modest, and yet it is worthy of respect. Every fisherman comes to this conclusion, especially in those moments when all the other inhabitants of the reservoirs fell through the ground. Most often this happens in the first half of summer, when the first “hot wave” rolls over. The fish becomes lethargic and passive, so you have to enjoy the sport of bleak. If it weren’t for her, many would sit at home and look forward to the first cold weather.
