Catching bream in the fall – subtleties and tricks
Bream is considered one of the most cautious representatives of the fish fauna. He is distrustful, suspicious, if he feels a catch, he will immediately spit out the bait and leave the dangerous place.
With the arrival of cold weather, this quality manifests itself even more strongly, therefore fishing for bream in the fall on the river has its own subtleties and difficulties. But experienced fishermen, who know the autumn habits and tastes of this fish, always return from fishing with a good catch. In addition, in cold weather, the chances of catching trophy fish weighing up to 5 kg increase. To safely get such a landing net, you must have a reliable tackle. Otherwise, you will have to bite your elbows because of a missed opportunity.
Behavior and habitat of bream in autumn
Until the first half of September, the weather is usually warm, at which time the autumn fishing for bream is no different from the summer. Sawbirds lead a gregarious lifestyle, large individuals keep aloof, but young animals and their mature relatives are most active at the same hours – from dawn to 10.00. The second exit for feeding, as a rule, occurs after 14.00, it can last one and a half to two hours. In general, bites are possible throughout the entire light period, but the most active bite is observed at the indicated hour intervals.
In the second half of the first autumn month, bream begin to gather in small flocks, move closer to the wintering pits, and intensively accumulate fat for the winter. From mid-September to the first days of October, the object of the catch is fattening, eating everything, from algae and small invertebrates to fry of their own kind. During this period, catching bream on the river is always effective, even beginners who have no experience behind them are lucky. But such fishing does not last long. When frosts begin, the fish shifts to great depths, practically does not move and does not feed. It is still possible to catch her, but for this you at least need to know her exact location.
At the very beginning of autumn, there are no special problems with finding bream, because it can still be attracted and held at the point with the help of bait. But when the temperature of the water begins to drop, the bream settle on the pits, and no secret mixture will help to lure them out of there. That is why, with the onset of the first autumn cold weather, the key to successful fishing will be a competent search for a place.
It is important to find the area on which this fish is concentrated, and then, by several fan casts, determine the catching point.
When fishing for bream in the fall on a feeder, an excellent search method would be to cast the tackle to the maximum distance from the coastline, followed by a few meters of rigging. If within 10 minutes there are no bites, you need to pull the feeder with hooks closer to the shore and repeat this action until the fish bites. This method allows you to quickly calculate the distance at which the fish is standing. If the bites continue, the line is marked with a marker so that in the future the rig will fall to the same point.
Starting in October, especially if it turned out to be cold, the greatest probability of finding a concentration of bream will be in the deepest parts of the reservoir with an uneven bottom. It is worth trying to fish on channel dumps and multi-stage edges. If the time is right, but the fish does not bite, you need to do something, otherwise the day will be wasted. It is best to try your luck elsewhere; in the middle of autumn, search tactics almost always lead to the desired result.
When fishing from a boat, it does not hurt to use such a useful device as an echo sounder, with which you can quickly find promising places… If there is no echo sounder, it will be replaced by a lead sinker tied to the line, but it will take much more time to measure depths.
Effective tackle for autumn bream fishing
To successfully catch bream in the fall, knowledge of its habits at this time of the year and the ability to choose a place is not enough. It is equally important to decide on the tackle. For example, an ordinary fishing rod at the end of the season, when the object of fishing ceases to approach the shore, is irrelevant, and it is unlikely that it will be possible to catch something from a boat with it. With what tools to go on a bream fishing? It is advisable to give preference to bottom gear.
Feeder – a versatile option for hunting bream throughout the open water season. In the fall, it will have to be slightly modified, namely, to replace the standard summer equipment with a lighter and more sensitive one. For large bodies of water, where casting distance plays an important role, feeder rods starting from 4.2 meters are suitable. On narrow rivers, you can wield shorter analogues (2.7 or 3.6 m). The reel for the feeder is used inertialess, always with a friction brake, capable of preventing breakage in case of too violent behavior of the hooked fish. Other requirements for it are sufficient forest capacity, smooth running and reliability. The coil should work smoothly and not fail at critical moments.
Considering the transparency of the autumn water, as well as the caution of the target, both the main line and the leads should be set as thin as the estimated size of the fish will allow.
Experienced sports anglers manage to pull out kilogram bream with leads of 0.14 and even 0.12 mm. For all the rest of the bream, including beginners, the best option would be: the main line – monofilament with a cross section of 0.3 mm, leads – fluorocarbon 0.16-0.20 mm. If the likelihood of catching a trophy specimen capable of tearing the line and breaking tackle is not excluded, the thickness of the leashes can be increased, but it should be understood that this will negatively affect the number and quality of bites.
Paternoster and asymmetric loop are recognized as the most effective installations for catching bream on a feeder in autumn. You can try other “classics”, not forgetting the main rule for this time of year – a thin line, a small inconspicuous feeder and a minimum of accessories.
Donka without a feeder – an excellent choice for the second half of autumn, when the object of fishing practically does not react to bait. The requirements for this tackle are the same as for the feeder – maximum rigidity and sensitivity. The bites of autumn bream can be very careful, and a rough rig simply does not transfer them to an equally rough stick.
Donkey’s main advantage is time saving. In the fall, the day becomes shorter, so every minute counts. Feeder tackle takes a long time to assemble and set up, in addition, precious time is spent on feeding the point, and with a regular donk everything is much easier and faster.
It is important to choose the right sinker for the donkey, taking into account the strength of the current in the selected place and the required casting distance… Experienced breeders recommend using a more informative sliding mount, in which one leash with a hook is located below the sinker, and the second is higher. In places with a high probability of snagging, a deaf installation can be used, with two leashes installed above the load.
From the boat, it is possible to catch bream on the grandfather’s variety of donkey – zakidushka. In such a tackle there is neither a rod nor a reel, it is thrown by hand. When playing fish, the fishing line must be taken into the boat, bring the catch closer and take it into the landing net.
Ring – Another effective folk left-handed tackle, for which you will need a floating craft. The unusual design of the ringing does not allow attributing it to any specific category of fishing tackle, the only thing that can be said about it is that it catches from the bottom, which means it is bottom. Its main elements are:
- short rod (optimal length – 100 cm);
- a strong cord that holds the volumetric mesh feeder at the bottom;
- lead or metal ring with a slot for the cord and a hole (eyelet) for the fishing line;
- simple inertial coil;
- main line with a diameter ranging from 0.25 to 0.30 mm;
- high-quality leader made of durable nylon with high breaking load (thinner than the main line);
- sharp, reliable hook made of fine wire.
The principle of catching bream on a ring from a boat is as follows: the feeder is located at the bottom, the current washes food out of it, and the leash with a hook and bait is also carried away in the same direction. Bream walks along the feeding path and stumbles upon an appetizing worm or maggot. This is followed by a bite.
The ring does not work in stagnant water, this tackle is designed for river flow. She perfectly catches in September, if it turned out to be warm, but in the middle of autumn there will be little sense from her.
Catchy autumn baits
On sunny September days, the object of the catch continues to peck at summer plant baits, such as barley or pea stick. Until the middle of the month, it can also be caught on puffs (honey, strawberry and others). As it gets colder, bream, like any other freshwater fish, needs more and more protein, so it switches to food of animal origin.
In October, you won’t be tempted by any peas, there should be something alive, mobile and containing a lot of protein on the hook. For example, maggot, dung worm, or leaf worm, which is easy to find on the shore of a reservoir in the lower layer of fallen leaves. At the end of autumn, when bream are already sleepy and eat little, fishermen switch to bloodworms. If you are lucky, you can catch a couple of specimens with this small appetizing larva even just before the freeze-up. The only thing that can interfere with the fishing of November bream is the ban on fishing in wintering pits, which is introduced on many rivers in early November.
If the location is chosen correctly, the echo sounder shows the presence of fish, but there is no bite, then it is worth experimenting with the bait, trying different combinations. Options: maggot + worm, miniature piece of bacon + bloodworm. By the way, in summer, bream responds well to fresh (unsalted) bacon, it is quite possible that it will not be able to refuse it in the fall.
In autumn, it is impossible to feed bream in the area. It is necessary to feed one single point, this is the only way to create competition for food between individuals. Moreover, this very point must be chosen correctly. If there is no fish on it, no amount of bait will help.
Autumn bream does not please with activity and is overly cautious. Some feederists forget about it and after the “bombing” they wonder why there is no bite. The reason is obvious – the fish, frightened by loud splashes at the moment the heavy feeder fell into the water, lurked or completely moved aside. That is why the usual starting food for the summer in the fall is undesirable. In the cold season, many fishermen are also afraid to overfeed the bream, but it is almost impossible to feed it to the point where it is no longer interested in bait. And yet, too much formula can easily ruin fishing. The fact is that at a certain moment of feeding, the concentration of odorous substances at one point reaches the level when they no longer attract fish, but, on the contrary, scare away.
Regardless of the composition, the bait for bream in the fall must necessarily be fine-grained, dusty… At home, it can be prepared from sunflower cake, bread crumbs and animal components (fodder maggot, crushed worm, bloodworm). For the bundle, land taken from the shore of the reservoir is used, or store super-soil. There should not be a lot of flavoring substances, otherwise the bait will have the opposite effect. For autumn fishing, you can recommend the smell of fennel, thyme or coriander.
Catching bream in the fall by months
September in recent years, it pleases with summer warmth and a fairly active bite, but there are exceptions. Cloudy and windy September weather creates far from the best fishing conditions. On such days, the fish bite sluggishly, feeding outings are short-lived, so staying on the river does not bring much pleasure. In good weather, it can bite all day, from early morning until sunset.
October makes some adjustments to fishing. Along with a decrease in temperature, fish activity decreases markedly. Breams huddled in flocks feed 3-4 hours a day. For fishing to be successful, you need to know exactly where they are concentrated and when they go out to feed.
November although it is considered an off-season in catching white fish, catching a couple of valid specimens is still possible. It is necessary to search for bream this month in the deepest holes. The bite is unstable, the bait practically does not work, the bait has to be selected experimentally, offering the sluggish fish either a nimble worm, or an appetizing maggot, or a bunch of bloodworms, attractively wriggling on the hook. But sooner or later, efforts bring results.
