Catching crucian carp in autumn
Catching crucian carp in autumn is difficult and not always successful. In the first half of September, while the summer heat is still holding, fishermen do not notice any special changes. But the lower the temperature drops, the more passive this fish becomes. With the arrival of mature autumn (October), the object of the catch almost completely stops moving. He still pecks, albeit sluggishly, but now he needs to serve the bait like breakfast in bed, right under his nose.
With the arrival of the first cold snaps, summer nozzles lose their relevance, barley and mastic are no longer in use. Workers in the warm season of bait are now ineffective, and in some reservoirs they have a negative effect on the crucian carp biting. It is enough for him that he was thrown into the water for the purpose of luring, he quickly gets saturated and does not pay any attention to the bait. The result also depends on weather conditions. Even in the summer months, if the air temperature and atmospheric pressure “jump” up and down, it is very difficult to find an active crucian carp flock. What can we say about autumn, when at any moment the wind may rise or it may start to rain.
But, despite all the above factors that negatively affect crucian fishing, it is possible to successfully catch silver beauties in the fall. To do this, at a minimum, you need to be able to find the sites of the object of fishing, know its habits at this time of the year, use the appropriate bait for the season and do not forget to be interested in meteorological forecasts.
Where to look for crucian carp in the fall?
Avid crucian carpenters divide the autumn fishing into two periods. The first is almost the entire September, if it turned out to be warm. At a comfortable temperature, crucian carp continues to feed in the coastal zone, among the aquatic vegetation, which has already begun to fall and die off. It bites a little worse than in summer, but large specimens are more often on the hook, it is possible to catch a trophy fish. On sunny September days, the fish continues to react to bait, gathers at the feeding point and pleases with a good bite.
The beginning of the second period, if nature does not throw a surprise in the form of abnormally heat, usually falls on the first days of October. The first serious cold snaps radically change the behavior of the crucian carp. The water in the coastal zone begins to cool down rapidly and becomes uncomfortable for him. The fish leaves the coast to a depth, concentrates on the pits and does not want to leave them anymore. In cold water, neither super-mixtures, nor secret compositions, nor “pheromone” attractants, which are fashionable today, will help to lure the crucian carp out of its shelter. But you can still catch it if you find such a hole and throw bait at the exits from it.
With a boat and an echo sounder, it’s easy to find such spots, but what about when fishing from the shore? As a rule, great depths are under steep banks, and there is nothing to do on gentle ones in the second half of autumn. It is also important to consider the direction of the wind. It is desirable that the coast is not only steep, but also surf. When catching a promising site, there is no point in waiting for a bite for a long time. After casting, two scenarios are possible: either the bait fell very close to the fish and a bite occurred within a few minutes, or it turned out to be in the wrong place. Passive crucian carp will not look for it, so 10 minutes without biting is an excuse to reload the tackle to another point.
The object of fishing is active during warming periods. On clear days, when the sun warms the water well, it returns to shallow water areas and feeds. You can count on effective fishing on the eve of worsening weather. The fish senses the approach of bad weather and tries to use the remaining time to the maximum – it bites greedily, confidently, swallows the nozzle deeply.
Tackle for catching crucian carp in autumn
Fishing for crucian carp in the fall involves the use of the same gear as for the entire open water season: a fishing rod and a feeder. The first one can be equipped with a reel to increase the casting distance and can be caught up to frost.
Both the float rod and the feeder tackle will have to be slightly altered, adjusting them to the seasonal characteristics of fishing. First of all, this is the high transparency of the water, in which an already sluggish crucian carp can generally refuse the offered food, being afraid of too thick fishing line. At this time, the rule “the thinner the line, the more bites” works, so some fishermen risk using even the winter version – a lead with a diameter of 0.1 mm. Why are they taking risks? The answer was given above: in the autumn months, a bite of a trophy crucian carp is not uncommon.
Aside from going to extremes, a 0.18-0.2mm main line and a 0.14mm leader are a smart choice. It is necessary to put thicker only if there are really large representatives of this species in the reservoir and the probability of biting one of them is very high. The same goes for the feeder. The advantage of thin fishing line is not only stealth, but also less sail. When fishing on the current, it does not pull it into a large arc, so the sweeps will be of better quality.
Taking into account the caution of bites, fishing for crucian carp in the fall with a float rod involves the use of sensitive equipment. This characteristic is determined by the size and shape of the float. In sensitivity, there is no equal to the goose feather, capable of transmitting very gentle bites. It should be loaded in such a way that about a third of it protrudes above the water. The top of the rod bite alarm can be painted in a bright color, while the bottom should be invisible.
The hook is selected according to the size of the bait, as well as taking into account the size of the intended prey. Hooks with numbers from 14 to 10 according to the international classification will do. If more than 400-500 g of crucian carp are caught in the reservoir, then you can put hook No. 8. It must be sharp, which is checked before fishing, and not in the process.
If it is cold and the crucian carp is standing on the pits, the bait will not have much effect on it, so a small feeder can be used exclusively as a load, or even better, replace it with a sinker of a suitable weight.
With a relatively high activity of the fish, the feeder can be filled with a fine-fraction mixture with the addition of animal components. Moreover, their content should be at least 30%. Strong and pungent odors in bait for carp fishing in the fall are unacceptable.
By the way, such an unsportsmanlike, but widespread summer rig, like the crucian carp killer, is ineffective in autumn, except in the first half of September, while it is still warm. It is designed for the gluttony of fish and self-notching due to the weight of the feeder and short leads. What kind of gluttony can we talk about in October, when the cold drives the crucian carp into the pits and completely discourages his appetite?
Nozzle and groundbait
As the temperature decreases, the object’s taste preferences change. If in the heat he willingly took for mastic, barley, corn and even ordinary bread, then after a cold snap, these baits stop working. On the eve of winter, fish need protein feed, so they should be offered a worm, bloodworm or maggot. It is advisable to take at least two types of bait with you, otherwise you may be left with nothing.
Crucian carp itself is quite picky, and in the autumn period this is doubly manifested. It happens that in the same reservoir, he is perfectly caught on maggots for several days, and then the biting suddenly stops. At the same time, the air temperature, the strength and direction of the wind, atmospheric pressure and other factors that can affect his mood remain the same. What happened? Why doesn’t it bite? Hard to tell. This crucian carp is the most unpredictable representative of the ichthyofauna. You just need to change the bait, and perhaps more than one, then it will work.
Sometimes it is possible to awaken the appetite of this fish with the help of sandwiches, which also include vegetable baits. For example, a worm with a pearl grain. For the sake of experiment, and in the fall it certainly will not hurt, you can try other options.
The bait is used the same as for fishing in the summer, the only thing is not to add a large amount of flavorings, this can frighten off the fish.
Autumn fishing for crucian carp by months
September… At the very beginning of the month, fishing is no different from what it was in July or August, but with a decrease in temperature, the feeding activity of the object of fishing gradually decreases. This may affect the catches of novice fishermen, but it does not interfere with crucian carps with extensive experience. Rather, on the contrary, they know how to adapt to the autumn crucian carp and that it is at this time of year that the chances of getting a trophy increase significantly. Fishing can be effective both on stagnant lakes and on river sections with a relatively calm current and a relief bottom.
Unlike summer in September, especially towards the end of the month, the fish begins to feed not at dawn, but from 7-8 am. The peak of activity is observed at noon hours, and closer to 16.00 biting stops. From this moment until nightfall, one can only hope for rare random bites. Since the crucian carp prefers to lead a gregarious lifestyle during this period, the right choice of place guarantees excellent fishing.
October… This month, you cannot count on gambling during the whole daylight hours. The object of the catch only periodically comes out to feed and then for a short time. In the morning it can bite from 8.00 to 10.00, then there is a lull, and an hour and a half before sunset, a second short-term exit is possible. In bad weather (cold, windy, rainy), there is nothing to do on reservoirs. Crucian carp reacts painfully to cold snaps, changes in atmospheric pressure and other natural “troubles”, so it is better to go fishing on a calm and warm sunny day.
In October, this fish leaves the shallow water that has become uncomfortable; now you need to look for it at depths of 3 to 5 meters. You can get it with a fishing rod only from a boat, but few people want to “dangle” in the wind in the middle of the reservoir. An alternative option is a feeder and long distance casting from the shore. On the rivers, first of all, it is worth exploring the bays, at the bottom of which the remains of vegetation are still preserved.
November… Only the most avid anglers go on crucian fishing in the pre-winter. It is very difficult to catch him this month. It no longer comes out of the pits, keeps exclusively at the bottom and can peck only in the middle of the day, if the sun warms the water a little. In cold and cloudy weather, there will be no bites. In November, you can seduce this fish with a well-chosen and served bait. Crucians concentrate at one point, they are not looking for food in order not to expend energy, so they need to feed the bait, as the fishermen say, under the very nose. No bait can stir them up at this time of year. Tackle should be used delicate, with the thinnest possible line.
Catching crucian carp in autumn is a laborious but entertaining activity. If you choose the right time, focusing on the weather, prepare the tackle “according to the season” and guess with the place, the result can be more than pleasant.
