Fishing for crucian carp in spring – the secrets of good fishing
Crucian carp is not familiar with our calendar, so spring for it does not begin on March 1, but from the moment the water warms up to 6-7 degrees. It is at this temperature that he finally wakes up, begins to actively recuperate after winter and take the baits offered by the fishermen, during this period, active fishing for crucian carp in the spring begins. There is very little left before spawning, it is necessary to have time to replenish the energy reserves expended during hibernation. But the zhor does not start immediately. Of course, you can catch this fish from the last, March ice, especially for large individuals, but their activity in early spring is close to zero.
A more or less stable bite is observed after the start of the flood: for rivers and other bodies of water, these are the last days of March, for standing ponds and lakes – the first half of April. At this time, the crucian carp flocks and begins to move in search of the warmest areas; on sunny days, it can rise to the surface, where the water is slightly warmer.
It must be said that at the very beginning of the open water season, in early spring, even minor weather changes strongly affect its behavior: small jumps in air temperature, precipitation, decrease or increase in atmospheric pressure, wind direction. In order for a few silvery beauties to flutter in the cage, the angler needs to know all the secrets of catching crucian carp in the spring on the pond: the habits of the fishing object, its habitat, the hours of feeding, and so on. Much depends on how well the tackle is selected and tuned.
Where to look for crucian carp in spring
As the water warms, this fish leaves deep holes and moves closer to the shore. The depth in the places of its spring deployment rarely exceeds 1.5 meters. Usually these are coastal areas with an uneven silted bottom and remnants of last year’s vegetation. Finding crucian carp in spring is not as difficult as some other inhabitants of water bodies, for this you just need to remember where it was best caught at the end of last season. If the lake or river bay is well known, then there will be no problems with the search.
Also, there are great chances to find a crucian carp flock where many trees grow near the water. The branches that have fallen from them create a snag in which the fish seeks food and hides from predators. The flock can stand there or periodically visit this place.
If he doesn’t bite right away, the fisherman has two options: to patiently wait for the crucian carp to approach or move on and check the rest of the promising areas.
It is better to choose a search tactic, since catching crucian carp in early spring at one point may not bring results at all.
When to catch
If the weather is not capricious, the sun is shining, there is no wind, and the thermometer shows more than 10 degrees Celsius, crucian carp can bite throughout the day. Yet his activity is not always the same.
He mainly eats in the morning and late in the evening, and prefers to take sun baths at lunchtime. After sunset, the bites completely stop, so fishing for crucian carp at night in cold water in the first two months is a waste of time. In addition, at night the temperature often drops to zero, and staying on a reservoir in such conditions is fraught with serious illness.
Experienced karasatniks advise to go to the pond so as to start fishing from 5-6 o’clock in the morning, that is, at dawn. The fish starts to be active with the first rays of the sun, but it gets saturated pretty quickly. Already at 9.00, the biting can completely stop.
Popular fishing methods
In spring, crucian carp is caught with a variety of tackles, from float tackles to a feeder, but since the fish is kept close to the shore, it is still better to use a fishing rod with a float – fly, match or plug. With such a tool, you can crawl through the thickets, carefully throw the bait in a difficult place and not scare away the cowardly spring carp. Unlike the feeder, which involves fishing from the bottom, the float rod allows you to change the fishing horizon if a flock of crucians starts walking in the middle or upper layers. In general, it is more relevant in the spring.
Fly fishing rod – it is not equipped with a reel and does not have an additional supply of fishing line, therefore, it can be used to fish only small coastal areas. If you choose a rod 5-7 meters long, then you can reach the accumulation of fish without going into the water. It is convenient to manage with her, control the process and chase the moving flock. It is best to catch with flying tackle in the morning, because as the water heats up, the crucian carp will begin to retreat to a depth and become inaccessible to it.
Match rod – allows you to cast the bait at a decent distance from the shore, so you can catch it all day. The main thing is to assemble it correctly. There is one regularity in match fishing: the longer the rod, the further the cast. This should be considered when planning your fishing trip. It is advisable to equip it with a comfortable coil with a soft stroke and a reliable friction clutch. The line is dark, sinking quickly, with low memory.
Plug tackle – allows you to put the bait literally under the nose of the crucian carp very accurately and without a loud splash. That is why it shows excellent results in early spring, when the fish is still not mobile enough. You can count on a good catch with a tough quality rod, thin line (0.12-0.14 mm), a float with a carrying capacity of up to 0.7 g and a hook that matches the size of the fish. The tactic of fishing with a plug is somewhat reminiscent of fishing with a jig: you can explore all the horizons or use a wiring, in which the bait slowly sinks to the bottom.
Groundbait and baits
In early spring, warmth is more important for crucian carp, and food remains in the background, so bait does not always give a positive effect. Closer to May, the reservoirs warm up, and feeding becomes an obligatory component of crucian fishing. Both homemade and purchased mixtures are used, fillers, loosening components and flavors are added to them. Spring crucian carp is unpredictable and capricious. In addition, in each separately taken reservoir, this fish has its own taste preferences, so the composition has to be selected experimentally. The following mixes can positively influence the course and the result of fishing:
- store bait mixed with soil 50/50 with the addition of live components (bloodworms, maggot, crushed worms);
- fragrant boiled millet with the same pieces of worms;
- carp mixture of corn, potatoes and oatmeal (crucian carp is also not indifferent to it);
- crumbly earth with the addition of bloodworms, placed in a gauze bag (relevant in early spring, nutritious larvae are gradually washed out of it).
It often happens that after feeding the point, a variety of fish are suitable for the smell, but not crucian carp. This is due to interspecies competition. In this case, you should not throw curses on the roach or bleak and change the place, sooner or later they will be full and leave. They will be replaced by a crucian carp, which can be held in small portions.
For fishing on a silted lake, you should prepare a light bait with a loose structure so that it stays at the top, does not sink into the silt. On the river flow, on the contrary, the mixture should be viscous and not fall apart for at least 20-30 minutes.
Just like any other fish, right after winter, crucian carp needs food rich in protein, so it willingly bites on larvae and worms. As the water warms up, he becomes interested in plant nozzles. It is difficult to say exactly when this transition occurs. In order not to have to ask for a piece of bread crumb from other, more prudent fishermen, in addition to classic fishing baits, it is worth taking vegetable baits. It can be barley, dough or semolina talker. The more varied the arsenal of baits, the better, since it is almost impossible to guess in advance what the fastidious spring carp will catch. During the day, his mood can change several times: then give him a worm, then a piece of soft dough.
Spring fishing for crucian carp can be uncomfortable due to weather instability, but this does not stop anglers. Spring is the very period when a weighty specimen weighing up to a kilogram is often on the hook, which is not a shame to bring home. For the sake of such trophies, they are ready to endure any natural whims.
